Podcasting is an under-utilized marketing channel for most businesses and online entrepreneurs.  There is a large segment of your audience who don’t have time to watch videos on a screen or read articles on your website .. they prefer to consume audio content on the go.

Starting a podcast is a great way to grow your brand build a bigger audience

If you’re looking to start a podcast, there’s no need to spend a lot of money or time on the equipment. In this guide, we’ll show you how to start a podcast with just your computer, webcam, USB microphone, and an internet connection.

Choose a topic

There are a lot of different topics that you can podcast about, so it’s important to choose one that you’re passionate about. Are you a musician? A comedian? A writer? There are podcasts for everyone.

For example, you are a marketer-

If you’re a marketer, consider starting a podcast about marketing. You can share tips and tricks for marketing your business, interview other marketers, or discuss the latest marketing trends.

Make a list of topics that interest you and start brainstorming episode ideas. It can be helpful to come up with a format for your podcasts, such as interviewing guests, discussing current events, or giving tips and tricks.

Record your first episode

Once you’ve chosen a topic and come up with some episode ideas, it’s time to start recording your first episode.

We highly recommend recording the podcast as a video, even if you only plan on releasing the audio version. Recording a video gives you more options to repurpose and distribute it on social media for even more exposure.

There are a few different ways to record your podcast.

If you’re recording content without a guest, you can use software like GarageBand or Audacity directly on your computer.

For interviews, you can record yourself and your guest at the same time using online services like SquadCast.fm, Riverside.fm, Zoom, or StreamYard.

If you’re just starting, we recommend using Zoom. It is easy to use and allows you to broadcast live on YouTube or Facebook, which can help you build an audience quickly (Zoom paid plan required to broadcast live)

If you’re looking to live-stream your interview to multiple platforms (YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc) at the same time, consider using StreamYard or Riverside.fm.

What equipment do you need to get started?

You don’t need a lot of expensive equipment to start a podcast. You can start with just your computer and an internet connection.

If you want to improve the quality of your recordings, we highly recommend you invest in a USB microphone like a Blue Yeti or Audio-Technica 2005 USB.  Having excellent audio quality will give your podcast a more professional feel plus will keep your audience engaged for longer.

If you’re looking to record your podcasts as videos (highly recommended) then you’ll need a webcam (Logitech makes great quality webcams).

Finally, you’ll need some software to edit your recordings. If you’re producing audio-only podcasts, you can use software like GarageBand or Audacity can be used to edit your podcasts and add effects like music or sound effects.

For editing video podcasts you can use free video editing software like OpenShot Video Editor or DaVinci Resolve

That’s it! With just a few pieces of equipment, you can start recording, editing, and broadcasting your podcast.

Upload to your podcast host

Once you’ve created your podcast episode, you need to upload the audio or video to a podcast host so your audience can discover and listen to it from their favorite podcasting app.

Your podcast host will also make sure your new episode is available on all the major podcasting directories including Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and Spotify so all your subscribers get notified automatically.

There are so many  different podcast hosting platforms available, but the two we highly recommend are Captivate.fm or Libsyn then distribute that podcast using repurpose.io podcast distribution service (get 1 month free of any of these services with discount code: REPURPOSE)

Promote your podcast

Now that you’ve created a podcast, it’s time to start promoting it!

There are several ways to promote your show, including social media, blog posts, and paid advertising. The goal of each promotion is to drive more listens for that to ultimately get more subscribers to your show.  When someone subscribes to your show (on Apple Podcasts or Spotify), they automatically get notified each time you publish a new episode which gives your podcast even more exposure.

The best way to promote your podcast is to create a website or blog specifically for your show (also known as a show notes page). This will allow you to embed the audio content,  episode transcripts, show notes, and other information about your podcast.  This is the easiest place for non-techies to listen to your podcast (they simply come to your site and click the play button). Any listen on your website counts towards your overall download statistics which is great.

Social media is a great way to promote your podcast. You can create short teaser clips from your podcast and share them on social media.  Whether you are converting audio content into videos (also known as audiograms) or sharing clips from your video interview, you should check out Repurpose.io.  You can create unlimited clips from your existing audio or video and automatically publish them to all your social media platforms including Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn

Finally, you can run paid advertising for your podcast. This can be done directly through social media platforms or Google AdWords.

No matter what method you choose, make sure you’re actively promoting your podcast and getting it in front of as many people as possible.

The final step is to keep publishing new episodes regularly. This will help keep your listeners engaged and ensure that they come back for more.
